BTC Average Dormancy: 8.613
The average age of the coins spent on a given day, in days. A spike means old coins moved. Every point shown is real up to the date on the badge above the chart.
Every coin spent today had been sitting untouched for some number of days. This averages that waiting time across everything spent that day โ the industry name for it is dormancy.
For example, 90 days means the typical coin spent that day had been sitting still for about three months, which is ordinary trading activity. A jump to 400 days means people were spending coins they had bought more than a year earlier, which usually means long-time owners are taking money off the table.
Long stretches of high readings during a rally have historically meant old owners selling into **rising** prices.
In words: for every coin spent that day, count the days since it last moved, then take the average across all of them, weighted by how many coins were involved.
Every point on screen is real and complete up to the date on the badge **above** the chart. The outside feed that supplied them is switched off for good; our own Bitcoin node โ a full copy of the blockchain that we run ourselves โ is recounting this series from the very first block, and new points resume once that finishes. Someone moving coins between their own wallets counts exactly like a sale, and one very old wallet moving can lift the whole day's average. Alert zones: the two dashed lines are measured percentiles of this exact stored series โ 51.9653 days is the 97.5th percentile and 72.9139 days the 99th, taken over the 1,469 daily points we hold for 2022-07-15 โ 2026-07-22 (1,265 of them counted by our own node, 204 from the retired outside feed).
Across that window the pair produced 70 band changes, about 17 a year. Neither line is a round number and neither is a forecast: they say **only** that a day sits in the top 2.5% or the top 1% of average dormancy we have on record. The highest days measured were 2025-07-04 (758.2 days) and 2024-05-28 (503.0 days). When the genesis recount finishes it will extend this series back to 2009, and both levels must then be re-derived from the longer history.
bitcoin-data.com (BGeometrics) supplied every point on this chart, and each one is real up to the snapshot date shown. Safu switched that feed off for good because its licence does not let us republish the data, so no newer days and no older days will arrive from it โ no paid key and no purchased history are planned. Safu's own Bitcoin node is re-reading the blockchain from 2009 to rebuild this history. Feed no longer used.
