Tells you whether Bitcoin is trending or just churning sideways. It reads 0 to 100: above 61.8 the market is stuck in a range, below 38.2 a strong trend is running. It says nothing about which direction.
A score from 0 to 100 comparing how much ground the price covered day by day against how far it actually got. Lots of movement that goes nowhere gives a high score; steady movement in one direction gives a low one.
For example, 70 means the price has been busy but going nowhere for two weeks — coiled up in a range, which often ends in a sharp break, though nothing here says which way. Below 38.2 the price has been travelling decisively, and that trend can be up or down.
Between the two it is telling you nothing useful. Direction plays no part in the calculation at all.
In words: add up the day-to-day price movement over the last 14 days, divide it by the full distance between the highest and lowest price in that window, and rescale the answer to a 0-to-100 score [Dreiss's 14-day Choppiness Index].
Our long price history stores **only** one price per day, so day-to-day movement here is measured from one closing price to the next rather than from the true highest and lowest price inside each day. Real within-the-day highs and lows exist from August 2017 onward, but using them would split the chart into two different methods, so we keep one method across all of it. The exact level can differ slightly from a high-and-low version; the trending-versus-sideways reading is the same.
The alert on this chart **does not** band on the 38.2 / 61.8 lines drawn here. Those are the published thresholds for a high-and-low Choppiness; on our closing-price version 28.7% of days sit above 38.2 and only 0.67% ever reach 61.8, and banding on that pair changes band 50 times a year. The alert's edges are the measured 2.5th percentile (7.0692) and 97.5th percentile (55.7648) of all 5,800 daily readings we hold (2010-09-01 → 2026-07-27), which changes band 17 times a year.
