Order-Book Depth

How many dollars of real buy and sell orders sit within 2% and 5% of the Bitcoin price on Binance and Coinbase, sampled once every hour. Thin depth means even a modest market order can move price a long way; depth draining away ahead of volatility is exactly the pattern this series exists to catch. Historical order-book depth is not available anywhere for free — this archive builds itself from August 2026 onward.

The dollar value of resting limit orders within a distance of the current price: bids (buy orders) below it, asks (sell orders) above it, at the 2% and 5% distances.

Deep books absorb big trades with little price movement; shallow books let the same trade cut through many price levels. Watching depth drain before a move is the closest thing markets have to seeing the crowd step away from the door.

Every hour we download the full visible order book for BTCUSDT on Binance and BTC-USD on Coinbase, take each venue's own mid-price, and sum price × size for every order resting within ±2% and ±5% of that mid. The two venues are added together.

One snapshot per hour is a sample, not the hour's average — depth can appear and vanish between samples. Visible limit orders only: iceberg orders and off-book liquidity are invisible to everyone. Two venues, spot only. The series starts in August 2026 and grows one point per hour; it cannot be backfilled, which is exactly why we collect it.

Sampled hourly from the public Binance and Coinbase order-book endpoints into our own database. Collected since 13 August 2026 — nothing is fetched from another analytics site.
