How much bitcoin changes hands on a normal day, as a share of every bitcoin that exists. 0.005 means an average day moved about 0.5% of all coins. Higher means coins are being passed around more often.
A share, not an amount: the coins moved on an average day over the past year, divided by all the coins that exist. It answers 'what fraction of the total supply moves on a typical day?'
Rising means coins are changing hands more often; **falling** means more coins are sitting still in wallets. For example, if it reads 0.004, an average day over the past year moved about 0.4% of every bitcoin in existence โ so at 19.9 million coins, roughly 80,000 โฟ a day.
Because it averages a whole year, one busy day will not move this line: read it across months, not days.
In words: add up the coins moved each day for the last 365 days, take the average day, and divide that by the total number of coins that exist [365-day average daily coins moved รท total supply]. Bitcoin's earliest months use fewer than 365 days until a full year of history exists.
Because it is a one-year average it will **never** spike on a single busy day. The coins-moved figure is blockchain.info's estimate and leaves out change sent back to the sender, so the true share moved is somewhat **higher** than shown.
