The number of separate addresses that took part in at least one confirmed transaction that day, as sender or receiver. An address is like an account number written into the blockchain.
Rising across weeks means more people and services are using Bitcoin; **falling** means things have gone quiet. For example, a climb from 700,000 to 950,000 active addresses a day over a few months is a real jump in usage, and in past cycles that kind of rise has come before the price moved.
Treat it as a busy-ness gauge, not a headcount of humans.
Taken as blockchain.info publishes it: the count of unique addresses appearing as a sender or a receiver in that day's confirmed transactions.
Addresses are not people. Exchanges move thousands of customers through a handful of addresses, while an ordinary wallet creates a brand-new address for every payment, so the number is **only** a rough stand-in for real users.
