BTC US Debt Outstanding & the Treasury's Cash: $40.05T
How much the United States owes, updated every business day by the Treasury itself, with the cash sitting in the government's own account beside it. When that account is refilled, money leaves the market.
Two numbers the US Treasury publishes about itself every business day. The first is the total debt outstanding, to the penny โ split into the part held by the public and the part the government owes itself through trust funds.
The second is the Treasury General Account: the government's actual chequing account at the Federal Reserve.
The debt line **only** ever goes one way, so its LEVEL **is not** the interesting part โ the slope is, and so is what happens around a debt-ceiling fight, when issuance stops and then floods. The cash account is the tradeable one: when the Treasury refills it, dollars leave the banking system, and that is the exact leg that gets subtracted in our Net Liquidity chart.
Read the two charts together.
Both series are published as-is by the Treasury and stored unaltered. The debt figures come from 'Debt to the Penny'; the cash balance is the Treasury General Account closing balance from Table I of the Daily Treasury Statement, published in millions and converted to dollars here.
Business days **only**, and no value is invented for weekends or federal holidays. The two series do not reach equally far back: the debt runs from April 1993, while the daily cash balance in this dataset begins 2022-04-18 โ before that date the cash line is simply absent, not back-filled.
The cash balance is drawn on its own left-hand axis because it is roughly forty times smaller than the debt; on one shared axis it would be a flat line at zero.
