A stablecoin is a crypto token designed to hold a value of about one US dollar. This adds up every one that DefiLlama tracks, giving the size of the cash pool sitting inside crypto.
Growth means money is arriving in crypto and waiting; shrinkage means money is leaving. For example, the pile growing from $180 billion to $210 billion over a few months means roughly $30 billion of extra cash has entered crypto and not yet been spent — that has usually come before or during risk-taking stretches.
It shows the ammunition available, not whether anyone will use it.
The circulating value of every stablecoin DefiLlama tracks, converted to US dollars and added up for each day, with bitcoin's price drawn alongside for comparison.
History starts in November 2017, and which stablecoins are tracked changes over time, so the total **is not** perfectly consistent across the years. Stablecoins tied to other currencies are converted at market rates.
