Bitcoin & crypto top movers — 16 Aug 2026
The biggest 24-hour gainers and losers across the top 500 by market cap, screened for real liquidity, with a cited reason wherever one holds up.
Bitcoin moved -0.1% in the last 24 hours, and 47 of the 160 coins that clear our liquidity bar (29%) closed the day green — that's the backdrop for everything below. The widest moves across the top 500 by market cap were led by Humanity at +38.4%. For each mover we say what the project actually is and, where a same-day headline genuinely explains the direction, why it moved. A single day is noise until it holds — where there's no clear catalyst we say so, and the move is better read as volatility than as the start of a trend.

How this list is built
Moves are 24-hour changes among the top 500 by market cap. We exclude stablecoins and wrapped or staked receipt tokens — their price tracks something else by design, so a big independent move is a pricing artifact, not a market view. We also drop anything under $50M market cap or $3M daily volume, anything turning over less than 2% of its market cap in a day, and any print beyond ±300% — at that size it is almost always a redenomination or a broken feed rather than a trade. 160 of the 500 coins we track cleared that bar today.
Reasons are quoted verbatim from same-day reporting, and only appear when the headline is about that coin, points the same way as the move, covers the same timeframe and names an actual cause: 2 of these 12 movers met that bar. For the rest we print "no clear catalyst" rather than attach an unrelated headline. Not financial advice.
