Three stacked bands, each one exchange's own bitcoin balance, laid on top of each other so the top of the stack is the three added together. The balances come from wallet addresses those exchanges published themselves, or that a public attribution page names — every address carries a source link you can open and check.
Because the bands are stacked, a figure you hover is that band **plus everything underneath it**, not that one exchange on its own. Each exchange's own separate balance is in the downloadable data as well.
**The picture starts on 18 August 2026**, the first day all three exchanges were counted in one snapshot, and grows by one day at a time.
**Watch the direction of each band rather than its size.**
For example, on 4 September 2026 the declared wallets held about **646,878 ₿ at Binance**, **146,853 ₿ at Bitfinex** and a much smaller amount at OKX. If the Binance band then fell by 20,000 ₿ over a month while the other two held steady, coins left Binance's declared wallets specifically — either customers moved them into their own keeping, or Binance moved them to a wallet it has not declared.
**Do not read this as market share.** The two largest custodians are missing entirely, so the biggest band on this chart is not the biggest holder of bitcoin.
Once a day **our own Bitcoin node** writes out its complete list of unspent coins and adds up the balance of every declared address, grouped by the exchange that declared it. The bands are running totals: Binance, then Binance plus Bitfinex, then everything tracked. A day is drawn **only** when every exchange reported — filling a missing exchange with zero would carve a drop into the picture that never happened.
**The chart starts on 18 August 2026 and there is no earlier history.** These are our own daily snapshots; nobody, ourselves included, holds a per-exchange reading of this address list from before that day. Reaching back to 2009 would require re-reading the whole chain on our node, which has not been run and is not promised here.
**Coinbase and Kraken are not on this chart at all.** Coinbase publishes no wallet address list, and its bitcoin custody is deliberately fragmented across a very large number of small addresses, so the few-large-cold-wallets approach cannot reach it; Arkham credits Coinbase with roughly 993,000 ₿ but publishes no addresses. Kraken's proof of reserves is a Merkle-tree attestation verified by an auditor, with no public address disclosure by design — its March-2025 report states 192,091.25 ₿ held, none of which is attributable to a citable address. Omitting the largest single custodian is the biggest known gap in this sample.
Bybit is absent too: its only openly downloadable address list is the December-2022 one, and those addresses now hold about 1,700 ₿, so drawing a Bybit band would understate it by roughly fifty times — a worse lie than an absent line.
The three bands are not sourced equally well. OKX's band comes from OKX's own published proof-of-reserves archive, and Bitfinex's from Bitfinex's own wallet-disclosure file. Most of Binance's band comes from Binance's own transparency post, but a few of its wallets rest on third-party attribution pages instead — that is someone else's guesswork about who owns an address, not Binance's word. All of it is still only an exchange's own word about which wallets are its own: strong evidence, not proof.
Exchanges also shuffle coins between their own wallets, which can look like a flow when nothing left the company, and a coin arriving at an exchange **is not** proof that anyone sold it. One point per day.
